Awards of Germany - Order of the Red Eagle 4th degree with swords (1879-1918)
The Royal Order of the Red Eagle originated from the highest Brandenburg Order of the Red Eagle. On June 12, 1792, King Frederick William II confirmed. (Great) this order as a royal award. As changes, he introduced the Prussian royal crown, instead of the princely crown, and the letters F-W-R (Friedrich, Wilhelm, Rex, that is, the king) on the reverse. During the existence of the award, many changes have been made. In 1810, the order was established by King Frederick William III. expanded to the 2nd and 3rd grade and presented oak leaves for the 1st and 2nd grade. In 1830, the 4th grade was first introduced. Only in 1846 the medallion was enameled in the 4th grade. In 1848, swords were established for military merit. In the period from 1848 to 1854, orders with a purple eagle and a raspberry eagle met in the medallion. Since 1854, the crimson color of the eagle in the medallion has been replaced by scarlet. Extensions of the order were the 3rd class loop in 1832, the jubilee number 50 and the award for non-Christians in 1851, the John Cross in 1864, the enamel ribbon of the Order of the Crown in 1865 and the foundation of the crown for all classes in 1892.
4th class around 1885 received fine-grained cruciform arms and smooth raised edges. Swords for military merit passing through the center were made of gold until 1916. After that, they were made of gilded silver. Crosses with fine-grained hands and swords were awarded only in the 1st World War. About 50 awards are known. Source: J.
