The comtère cross shown here is the second highest class of the order. Famous manufacturers were Eduard Föhr, a court jeweler from Stuttgart and F. Steinam Hofuvelier from Stuttgart. Crosses, among other things, differ from different agraphs to which the crown is attached. For Fora, the agrafe is made in the form of an ornate canvas, and for Steinam - in the form of 2 wide canvases (like ribbons). This is where Fehr's cross and Steinam's pendant and crown occur. Late crosses were also made of silver with gilding.
The Order of the Württemberg Crown was established by King William I on September 23, 1818. To this end, the Order of the Golden Eagle (1807) and the Civil Order of Merit (1806) were replaced by a new order. Initially, the order had 3 classes: a large cross, a komtur and a knight. It was accompanied by a gold and silver medal for merit. Bearers were required to wear the order in their own name and coat of arms. Bourgeois carriers were elevated to personal nobility. Only the king himself could determine the inclusion in the order. In 1864, the Knight's Cross was extended with a crown. Another change was a special large cross for the ruling rulers with a special ribbon. During the war of 1870/71, swords were donated for all classes. Knights were divided into 1st and 2nd grades. Knights of the 2nd class were awarded only until 1886. Another expansion was in 1886 the fund of the Honorary Knight's Cross, also awarded the crown for special merits. Since 1892, the honorary knight's cross was the nodal cross, the silver medal for merit was abolished. The continuation for the knights of the 1st class was the lions between the cross sleeves. The order was subject to return either upon promotion to a higher class or upon the death of the bearer.
Eight-pointed cross made of gilded silver. The cruciform arms are maroon golden and enameled. Front and back with a raised round middle shield. Between the cross sleeves are golden lions. The upper 2 are turned up, the lower - down. Between the tops of the upper cruciform levers there is an agraffe in the form of 2 bridges, to which an open five-arc royal crown is movably attached. A ring passes through the imperial apple of the crown, into which an elongated ribbon ring is mounted.
