The cross was established simultaneously with the Military Cross for Merit on February 27, 1864 by King William I. It replaced the military badge of honor of the 1st class that had been in effect until that time. The inscription on the reverse side - Kriegs-Verdienst - fixed the difference with the Common Badge of Honor. To do this, it was not necessary to acquire a second class. He was awarded for outstanding courage in the war from sergeant major to the bottom.
These are crosses with the manufacturer's designation - A W - in the medallion cylinder, for Emil August Wagner and with the manufacturer - W -, the notch mark on the lower shoulder of the cross, for John. Wagner and his son. There are also crosses without a manufacturer's designation. Crosses do not carry silver punches on the lower cross. Crosses were first awarded during the war in 1864. During the war of 1870/71, the award was suspended. Rewarding resumed only during the colonial wars.
