The cross was presented by Grand Duke George on 1 July 1846 in recognition of many years of service in the army. Crosses were awarded to officers after 25 years, which at first were of gold. After that, they were made of gilded bronze. At the same time, army service crosses for soldiers from sergeant major in descending order were donated to 3 classes. For non-commissioned officers, a silver cross was awarded over 25 years of service. For 18 years of service, the cross was made of bronze with silver middle shields superimposed. For 12 years, the cross was entirely of bronze. The award ceremony took place on May 1 of each year. Applications had to be submitted to the military command before Jan. Crosses were subject to return after death. These crosses were awarded a short time before the military convention on the 23.12.1872 with Prussia and are therefore rare. The middle shield has a diameter of 16 mm. In addition to the cross with a silver shield, crosses were minted from a single piece.
