Awards of Germany - Royal Crown Order Cross 3rd class with swords 1869-1918
The Royal Crown Order could be awarded with swords from 1864, for services to the enemy. The reason for the creation of the Sword Fund was the war of 1864 against Denmark and the idea of equality before the Order of the Red Eagle. Initially, the provisions of the Order of the Red Eagle of September 16, 1848 were also in effect. On 22 April 1864, the provisions for the Royal Order of the Crown were updated. Regulated, in particular, the awarding of swords on the ring and the color of ribbons, for example, for senior military ranks. The first crosses with swords from 1864 to 1868 still had a small royal crown in the medallion. The cross presented here with a large crown has been awarded since 1869. The gold cross depicted here was awarded until about 1916. After that, crosses began to be made of silver with gilding.
The Royal Crown Order was established on October 18, 1861 by King William I in memory of the coronation. The Royal Crown Order originally consisted of 4 classes. Crosses from the first to the third grade had white enameled cruciform arms, the fourth grade was without enameled cruciform arms. 1st and 2nd grades were awarded as a cross, as well as a chest star. During the award, the crown in the middle medallion had various forms that give an idea of the award period. According to the latest data, you can now assign 4 models and production periods. Sword jewelry was subject to return, but could be awarded posthumously, and then remained with relatives.
