This badge was named 2. A form for members over the age of 21, the so-called Jungmans, has been introduced since 1926. The Jungmanns were the oldest group in the Steel Helmet youth organization, the Union of Front-Line Soldiers. The organization was founded in October 1923 and brought together members between the ages of 17 and 24. The Jungstahl helmet was not run as a separate entity, but was under the control of the federal government. There is various information about its creation from 1921 to 1924. Until 1924, the steel helmet was a pure alliance of participants in the war, after which boys, women and non-military participants were also accepted. Therefore, the base of the Jungstach helmet can more likely be dated to a period shortly before 1924.
The front-line union "Steel Helmet" was founded on December 25, 1918 by Franz Zeldt and Theodor Dusterberg in Magdeburg as initially a regional association. At a meeting of front-line soldiers on September 20-21, 1919 in Magdeburg, the Bund officially became an imperial organization. At that time, there were 15 local groups with about 2,000 members. In 1925, it already numbered 250 thousand members, and by the beginning of the 30s - 500 thousand. Theodore Dusterberg became the 2nd federal leader in 1927 during the transformation of the Steel Helmet. Düsterberg was on 9 March 1924 at the decision when Jews were barred from membership. When, after coming to power, the NSDAP became aware of his Jewish origin, he was fired. Later he was even put in a concentration camp.
In the early 1930s, the Youth Helmet had to deal with the loss of members, as many young people preferred to join the Hitler Youth, and double membership was prohibited by the Steel Helmet.
