This large silver medal was established on March 22, 1932 by Reich President Paul von Hindenburg. The reason was 100. Day of the poet's death. Presented here 2. The form was given under Adolf Hitler from November 1934 in a modified design. The first form under Hindenburg was 62 mm smaller. The original reverse side with Goethe's portrait has become the front since 1934. The new reverse was supplemented with National Socialist characteristics, and the diameter was increased to almost 70 mm. The original purpose of the medal was to honor those who deserved the 100th anniversary of Goethe's death in Weimar. It has since been awarded to distinguished scholars and artists, as well as civil servants and politicians. Hindenburg's first form, in addition to the target inscription - FUERKUNST -/- And -/- SCIENCE - depicts an eagle with outstretched wings above it and a snake under it, which digs into the tail, thus forming a circle. The marginal inscription here is GESTIFTEN - IM - GOETHEJAHR - 1932 -, the opposite is DER - REICHSPRÄSIDENT -. The reverse font - GOETHE - is located on the left and larger. Awards among the National Socialists excluded well-known undesirable circles of persons. The number of awards at Hindenburg is 195. The new front since 1934 has a font - GOETHE - in modified writing on the right edge, and the portrait is significantly altered. The medal was awarded with a diploma in a black leather case with a blue-purple inlette. On the rim of the medal is engraved the name of the awarded.
