The medal was established on April 14, 1871 by Prince Gunther Friedrich Karl II. Non-commissioned officers and soldiers of the 3rd Thurig Infantry Regiment No. 71 with Sondershausen citizenship were awarded, conscientiously fulfilling their duty in the war against France. The regiment fought as part of the 8th Infantry Division in the IV. Army Corps, including at Beaumont, at Sedan, the Battle of Mont Valery and the Siege of Paris. This was preceded by an agreement with Prince Georg of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, who in turn established the Military Merit Medal of Honor 1870/71. The medal was to have the same size as the Prussian award "Military Badge of Honor of the 2nd Class." The foundation in Sondershausen occurred a little later than in Rudolstadt. Design and production for Sondershausen was taken over by J. Godet & Sohn in Berlin. A total of 83 medals were won.
