The Mecklenburg Order of the Griffin was awarded as the highest recognition for outstanding services.
The order was established on 15 September 1884 by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV. and Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich V. Both Grand Dukes were Grand Masters of the order. Both grand duchies had their own chancellor of the order. Awards were held separately in both countries. The award of the order was announced at the end of the year.
It was divided into the following classes: large cross, large komtur, komtur, knight. Extensions of the order were swords to the Great Cross, diamonds to the Comtur crosses, as well as the ducal crown to the knight's crosses. Since 1904, the Griffin Order has been awarded in both Grand Duchies of Mecklenburg. When assigned a higher level, lower-level orders were to be returned. The Griffin Order was made by 2 manufacturers, Rose in Schwerin and Godet in Berlin. The crosses at "Comture" and "Grand Comture" were the same in size and construction. The large komtur, unlike the komtur, received a breast star. Источник: Peter Ohm-Hieronymussen, Die Mecklenburg-Strelitzer Orden und Ehrenzeichen, 2000.
