Awarded to
Individuals who served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II.
Reasons for the Award
Service for at least one day in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
The medal is awarded for service in the Pacific Theater between December 8, 1941 and September 2, 1945, as well as to soldiers serving in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Sumatra. The periods of service in these countries are as follows:
Hong Kong 8.12.41-25.12.41.
China and Malaysia 8.12.41-15.02.42.
Sumatra 8.12.41-23.03.42.
For service in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Sumatra after the above dates, the serviceman was awarded the Burma Star.
The naval warfare qualification criterion for the Pacific Star is service in the Pacific Ocean, including the South China Sea, in the Indian Ocean east of a line running south from Singapore around the coast of Southeast Sumatra, through Christmas Island, and south along the meridian of 110 degrees east latitude.
The Pacific Star is awarded to a soldier or sailor killed or wounded in action, regardless of the length of service. Service.
If a service member has met the criteria for the Burma Star but was previously awarded the Pacific Star, the Burma Star is not awarded, but a corresponding clasp is attached to the Pacific Star ribbon.
The Pacific Star is six-pointed, made of copper-zinc alloy, 44 mm high and 38 mm wide.
The obverse of the award features the monogram of George VI, surmounted by the British Crown. Around it is a ring with the inscription "Pacific Star." The reverse of the award is plain, although awards for Australian and South African service members may have the recipient's name engraved.
The ribbon of this award, along with other commemorative stars of World War II, was, according to legend, designed directly by King George VI. The dark green colour symbolises the jungle, the light yellow stripe symbolises the coastline and beaches, and the Royal and Merchant Navy, Army and Air Force are represented by stripes of dark blue, red and light blue respectively.
